Overview

Deerfield Discovery and Development, LLC (3DC) is the drug discovery and development arm of Deerfield Management Company, L.P. (“Deerfield”), an investment firm dedicated to advancing healthcare, and is engaged in drug discovery research in collaboration with faculty from top universities across the United States. 3DC plays a critical role in identifying and progressing early-stage therapeutics from scientific discovery through clinical proof of concept, via rigorous due diligence of proposals, and design and execution of relevant experiments for approved projects. 3DC partners closely with principal investigators in Deerfield’s academic collaboration network, corporate and CRO partners to progress projects to value inflection points, and partners with Deerfield’s investment colleagues to execute the optimal monetization strategy for each project.

The VP, Academic Outreach will drive the outreach strategy for our 18 and growing academic collaborations with the goal of building a differentiated portfolio of innovative therapeutics projects and enhancing and expanding our relationships at each institution. This individual will lead the outreach capability by working through the Scientific Collaboration Directors (SCDs) at each of our academic partner institutions. The SCDs are Deerfield’s representatives at each of our partner institutions and are responsible for the Deerfield-Institution relationship and for sourcing therapeutics projects for the 3DC portfolio. The VP, Academic Outreach will also leverage the 3DC team to identify high-potential projects for funding. The VP, Academic Outreach will be a critical interface between Deerfield and our academic partners. This role reports directly to the CEO of 3DC.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Drives outreach strategy for Deerfield’s academic collaborations.
• Leads efforts to ensure 3DC achieves their annual goals for funding approvals for new projects.
• Contributes to defining and supporting 3DC’s portfolio strategy.
• Serves as functional lead for Scientific Collaboration Director community.
• Provides clear and consistent messaging to the SCDs regarding Deerfield’s interests.
• Provides guidance and mentorship to SCDs regarding approaches to identifying promising therapeutics concepts and for cultivating them into compelling proposals that can be funded.
• Leverages the SCD community to identify optimal engagement strategies that can be broadly leveraged and will enhance our relationships and ability to source innovative projects.
• Provides guidance and mentorship to SCDs in the creation of critical path/work plan development; oversees the creation of these plans to ensure they are robust and address the key questions.
• Participates in workplan development depending on capacity needs.
• Develops standardized formats and approaches to Joint Steering Committees to ensure maximum efficiency.
• Serves as a JSC member for all academic collaborations.
• Partners with the individual SCDs to ensure that all aspects of the Collaboration agreement and associate agreements are being adhered to.
• Develops consistent and equitable approaches to SCD performance management and compensation, partnering with key stakeholders at the institutions to balance the guidelines and needs of the individual SCDs and their respective institutions.

Qualifications

• PhD in the life sciences required. Minimum of 15 years of related experience in drug discovery. Experience in both industry and academia preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Demonstrated understanding of the drug discovery and development process including direct experience working in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
• Ability to effectively interact with all levels of industry and University employees, including faculty principal investigators and University leadership.
• Ability to facilitate interactions designed to strengthen the relationship between the institution and Deerfield.
• Demonstrated leadership and people development skills.
• Ability to make independent judgments and act on decisions on a daily basis and assumes responsibility for decisions, outcomes, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
• Ability to work flexibly on multiple tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
• Knowledge of intellectual property and licensing and research contracts.
• Highly organized, resourceful, and detail oriented.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
