The Tax Attorney Sr. Group Manager manages multiple teams through other managers. In-depth understanding of how own sub-function contributes to achieving the objectives of the function. A good understanding of the industry, direct competitors’ products and services, is also necessary in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of the business. Requires thorough understanding of strategic direction of the function within the relevant part of the business, combined with a solid conceptual/practical grounding in both the function and/or area of expertise and related subject areas. Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Some external communication/negotiation may be necessary. Responsible for executing functional strategy in area managed. Determines approach to implementing functional strategy. Accountable for end results, budgeting, planning, policy formulation and contribution to future strategy of the area(s). Impact reflects size of team managed, strategic influence on the business and interaction with other functions or businesses. Full management responsibility for multiple teams, including management of people, budget and planning, to include duties such as performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations and budget approval. May be doing involved or responsible for diverse (cross-discipline) activities. Typically, a direct report to a C16 role and function as an intergral member of the functional leadership team within a country/site location, job family, or line of business.
Responsibilities:
This position will provide comprehensive support to ICG with respect to federal, international, foreign, indirect taxes, and state and local tax issues; and will also be the primary tax advisor for business and non-business related domestic restructurings. The position is responsible for tax advisory coverage of ICG and all its constituent businesses. The position will advise on domestic planning important to the firm’s objectives, including matters related to section 482, Subchapter C, consolidated return matters and state and local taxation. The position will advise on operational tax risks, income tax risks and client transaction taxes and franchise risks arising in connection with review of the tax suitability of products. The position is expected to stay abreast of regulatory and legal issues impacting the business and the firm and to actively participate in the industry initiatives relating to financial products and services including proactively providing businesses and other stakeholders with tax updates.
The position requires a broad range of detailed technical tax and legal expertise, business acumen and analytical skills to understand complex transactions, in addition to a working knowledge of financial statements/accounting. The position requires strong familiarity with financial products, including equities, fixed income, commodities, FX, interest rates, capital markets origination and financings. The position will sit on cross-functional approval committees and will engage with partners in legal, accounting policy and risk. It will also engage with senior business leaders. The position will need to coordinate matters with the Citi tax compliance and the Citi tax information reporting functions. It is anticipated that this position will supervise other tax lawyer(s) and tax professional(s).
The successful candidate will be able to effectively manage outside counsel and other outside experts and will be expected to engage with and challenge the substance of advice received; will be able to communicate clearly and concisely with the business and other internal stakeholders about tax and franchise risks and costs; will work in coordination with subject matter experts and project managers to educate businesses on new legal developments and to ensure that new policies, controls and procedures are launched successfully; and must also be able to exercise discretion and judgment with respect to tax determinations, tax positions to be taken by the firm, and tax opinions produced by outside advisors.
