The role
The role of Senior Engineer R&D will report to the Manager of Neuromodulation Technologies. This position will be responsible for developing novel waveforms and stimulation methods to deliver energy to the nervous system to treat conditions in the fields of pain management, digestive health, or respiratory health. You will work with Marketing and customer groups to create product specifications through site visits and physician focus groups. You will develop pre-clinical and clinical protocols and execute studies to answer key technical question and to provide proof of concept. You will be responsible for product design and engineering, leveraging fail-fast, iterative prototyping, test development, and creating protocols and reports related to design verification and validation testing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist in compiling customer requirements and product specifications
• Design and lead benchtop, pre-clinical, and clinical testing of electrode / waveform designs.
• Leverage computational modeling/FEA, rapid, and traditional prototyping techniques to create functional designs and test those designs with users
• Assist in creating Use Cases and a Hazard and Safety/FMEA analysis
• Apply working knowledge of materials used in medical device applications in the context of biocompatibility and hazardous substance directives
• Conduct and document technical reviews, serve as independent reviewer
• Compile, organize and interpret technical data and specifications
• Manages the day-to-day operational and tactical aspects of multiple or large-scale projects
• Create contingency plans to mitigate technical risks
• Develop and conduct design verification and validation activities
• Write reports and support regulatory filing activities
• Create and document intellectual property through disclosures, understand state of the art and IP landscape
• Work with cross-functional teams to support new product development activities
• Develop and leverage a robust working knowledge of Design Controls and various Quality Systems to efficiently navigate through product design

Your qualifications
Required:

• Advanced degree in a scientific or engineering discipline such as electrophysiology, biomedical engineering, or similar field related to neuromodulation (M.S., Ph.D.)
• 5+ years of medical device experience
• Experience in writing pre-clinical / clinical protocols related to neuromodulation / functional electrical stimulation and executing these studies
• Rigor and passion for complex design and new product development
• Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate well through written and verbal means
• Ability to interface effectively with health care professionals and medical device customers
• Working knowledge of statistical methods, including the use of leading statistical software
• Up to 30% travel at times

Preferred:

• Class II/III medical device design experience
• Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification
• Experience with volume manufacturing techniques including energy and adhesive based bonding, extrusions, secondary processes (swaging, bending, skiving) and surface finishing on small components
