Job Overview:
Reporting to the Principal Scientist (Materials), the Senior Materials Scientist will play a critical role in refining the science behind our client’s silicon anode innovations. This position will help enable the R & D team to optimize the processing and performance of our client’s pure Si anode technology for various customer applications. Key areas of focus will be on enhancing the binder/Silicon interface and leading the troubleshooting and refinement of that interface using the latest analytical tools like SEM, TEM, EELS, etc.
This position and its hands-on research and development will have a strategic impact on the commercial rollout of our client’s silicon battery designs. This position is a rare opportunity to be at the forefront of growing a startup into a flourishing business.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead Anode powder and electrode characterization activities to examine, interpret and refine silicon electrode designs and formulations.
Develop and evaluate powder surface modification approaches to enable improved pure Si anode designs.
Work in close collaboration with other scientists and engineers to interpret the characterization findings to enable rapid refinements and improvements to the materials, electrode formulations and processes.
Conduct materials, formulation and design evaluations for improved versions of anodes.
Propose and conduct experiments on prototype cells including but not limited to
electrochemical testing and cell teardowns.
Analyze and present technical results to management.
Design and lead lab-scale experiments to validate critical processing methods for Anode electrodes.
Utilize Taguchi methodology to develop and execute structured design of experiments when appropriate to guide technology development and decision-making.
Identify, contact, and interface with external laboratories and partners to execute projects within the scope of responsibilities.
Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for consistent use of test equipment and processes.
Adhere to and actively participate in a clean and safe work environment following our client’s procedures and guidelines.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Materials Science or Chemistry with a minimum of 5 years experience in the Li-ion battery field, ideally with a focus on novel materials development and their characterization for next-generation chemistries.
Strong background in the processing and modification of materials to impart desired surface properties to achieve specific characteristics, the physical and chemical characterization of such materials, as well as interpretation of the results to enable rapid refinement and progress.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of cell level lithium-ion battery materials, components, performance, cell testing/data analysis, and failure modes.
Proficiency in prototype cell assembly, electrochemical testing techniques, working in a glovebox or dry room.
Familiarity with DOE, FMEA and Taguchi methodologies preferred.
Detail oriented, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to combine theory with
empirical observations.
A self-motivated, persistent, hands-on, results-oriented individual with strong collaborative
skills to be successful in a team environment.
Ability to interact effectively with suppliers, partners, vendors, and colleagues.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of
professionalism and maturity with good judgment.
Passion for innovation in the energy storage space.
