Purpose:
The hospice Medical Director will have overall responsibility for the medical component of the hospice program on a Per Diem basis. They will serve as a medical resource to the interdisciplinary group, complement attending physician care, and will assure continuity of hospice medical services and appropriate measures to control patient symptoms.
What You’ll Do:
Responsible for certifying and recertifying patients to hospice based on all available diagnoses and prognostic indicators to ensure continuation of Medicare Hospice Benefit
Oversee hospice teammates and act as medical resource to IDG to ensure all medical needs of the patient are met
Provide oversight of the plan of care, orders, medications, and treatments for patients
Adhere to regulations, standards, and conditions of participation required by Medicare, accrediting body, and federal/state statutes governing the provision of service
Ensure the provision of direct medical services to patients either directly or through arrangements, as appropriate, in the absence of the patient’s attending physician
Documenting care provided in the patient’s clinical record providing evidence of progression of the end-stage-disease process
Maintain current knowledge of the latest research and trends in hospice care and pain/symptom management
Educate and consult colleagues and attending physicians related to admission criteria for hospice and palliative care
Review, develop, and optimize protocols for treatments, patient care policies, emergency procedures, and interventions
Counsel and support patient/family in dealing with end-of-life issues
Lead, coach, and train direct reports as needed
What You’ll Need:
Must be a Doctor of Medicine/MD or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), licensed to practice medicine in the VA State with an active DEA license
Certified in Hospice or a related specialty highly preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, plus a variety of other word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and presentation software
Must have the ability to demonstrate self-confidence and sound judgement relating to all medicial/clinical decisions
Ability to communicate effectively, empathetically, and compassionately with patients, families, and all other relevant internal/external stakeholders
Must be included in the Medicare program
Open to traveling on an as needed basis (likely 15-20% of the time to local or out-of-town/state seminars, conferences or meetings
