Overview

Deerfield Discovery and Development, LLC (3DC) is the drug discovery and development arm of Deerfield Management Company, L.P. (“Deerfield”), an investment firm dedicated to advancing healthcare, and is engaged in drug discovery research in collaboration with faculty from top universities across the United States. 3DC plays a critical role in identifying and progressing early-stage therapeutics from scientific discovery through clinical proof of concept, via rigorous due diligence of proposals, and design and execution of relevant experiments for approved projects. 3DC partners closely with principal investigators in Deerfield’s academic collaboration network, corporate and CRO partners to progress projects to value inflection points, and partners with Deerfield’s investment colleagues to execute the optimal monetization strategy for each project.

We see an entrepreneurial Biologics leader to develop and lead the Biologics capability within 3DC. The Head of Biologics will report directly to the CEO of 3DC and be part of a cross-functional leadership team. This role will be responsible for building a differentiated biologics portfolio, driving execution of that portfolio and partnering with Deerfield colleagues to create value from that portfolio. The Head of Biologics will be responsible for building a world-class biologics capability, leveraging internal resources and external partners and resources. And this role will be responsible for providing biologics expertise across Deerfield Management’s investments and endeavors.

• Establish and lead biologics drug discovery efforts by building a high-performing team of internal experts, setting up an in-house laboratory, and leveraging an external network of partners to create and advance a biologics pipeline with innovative, competitive programs across multiple therapeutic areas.
• Develop a comprehensive biologics portfolio strategy, support the evaluation and selection of projects with strong potential to transform patients’ lives, and implement drug discovery plans for efficient pipeline progression.
• Represent the biologics group in a senior leadership capacity across 3DC and within Deerfield, and cultivate productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external key stakeholders.
• Provide and maintain state-of-the-art expertise and technical capabilities in the field of biologics discovery, and identify opportunities for scientific novelty and innovation.
• Drive leading-edge biologics tool development for target validation/advancement of discovery projects.
• Responsible and accountable for design, oversight and interpretation of scientific experiments to drive sound strategic decisions, reduce risk, and generate greater value.

Qualifications

Required Profile and Experience

• PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology or related field
• Minimum 10-15 years of experience in biologics drug discovery and pre-clinical development, of which at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
• Thorough understanding of the biologics drug discovery process from target validation and therapeutic concept through transition to clinical development
• In-depth knowledge and technical expertise of a broad spectrum of therapeutic modalities in biologics, including mono- and multi-specific antibodies, antibody fragments and nanobodies, alternative scaffolds, antibody-drug conjugates, protein therapeutics and cell-based therapies
• An established professional track record of solving complex drug discovery and development problems, as evidenced by publications and patents
