Team Description:
The AI Foundations team at Capital One is responsible for implementing our AI vision. We collaborate with academia, build production systems, and apply the latest AI advancements to our business. As a Distinguished Applied Researcher, you will work closely with our product, technology, and business leaders to drive strategic direction and mentor a team of applied scientists.

Responsibilities:
– Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions with their finances.
– Utilize various technologies, such as Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, and more, to extract insights from large volumes of data.
– Design and build AI foundation models, from development to implementation.
– Conduct high-impact applied research to improve customer experiences.
– Translate complex technical concepts into tangible business goals.

– Previous experience delivering platform-level or solution-level code.
– Demonstrated expertise in machine learning through publications or projects.
– Ability to independently pursue impactful research problems.

Basic Qualifications:
– Ph.D. with at least 4 years of experience in Applied Research or M.S. with at least 6 years of experience in Applied Research.

Preferred Qualifications:
– Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
– For NLP focus: Ph.D. or Masters with 10 years of industrial NLP research experience, contributions to large language models, and publications at relevant conferences.
– For Behavioral Models: Contributions to large-scale user behavior models, publications on training models on graph and sequential data structures.
– For Optimization: Publications or experience in optimizing training of large language models.
– For Finetuning: PhD focused on model guidance and experience deploying fine-tuned language models.
– For Data Preparation: Publications on tokenization, data quality, dataset curation, or labeling, and contributions to large open-source corpora.

Salary:
The salary range for this role is as follows:
– New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $322
